Why We Don’t Provide Written Estimates Right Away

A question we get often at Odd Fellows Contracting is:

“Why can’t you just give me a written estimate before I commit?”

It’s a fair question — and it comes from a good place. When you’re considering a remodel, especially a large one, you want to know what it might cost. We get that. And, here’s why we don’t hand out written estimates before the design process begins — and why that actually protects you.

Estimates Without Design Are Just Fancy Guesses

Let’s be honest — a written estimate without a completed design and clear material selections isn’t really an estimate. It’s a guess. And while some contractors might hand out “free estimates” to get their foot in the door, those numbers are rarely accurate.

At Odd Fellows Contracting, we believe in being honest from the start. We want you to have real numbers based on real planning — not ballpark figures that will likely change later and leave you frustrated.

Accurate Estimates Take Time — and Expertise

Creating an accurate estimate means:

  • Reviewing your space thoroughly

  • Collaborating with our designers

  • Factoring in materials, finishes, labor, and timeline

  • Checking with trusted suppliers and trades

That’s not a quick or surface-level task. It’s a thoughtful process that takes real time and energy from a skilled team. If we built that cost into every project — including for people who might not move forward — it would drive up pricing for everyone.

By waiting until we’ve started the design and received a deposit, we’re able to keep our pricing fair and our process focused.

We Give You Real-Life Project Examples Instead

We’re not going to leave you in the dark.

Before any official design begins, we’ll share real, recent projects that are similar to yours. You’ll see actual photos and actual costs. That gives you a transparent, realistic picture of what your project could cost — no guesswork, no gimmicks.

We’re Not Like Every Contractor — And That’s Intentional

Some contractors offer quick, written estimates as a sales tactic. But that’s not how we do things. We don’t rush. We don’t oversell. We do offer a preliminary investment range, based on past projects with similar goals, to help you understand what’s typical before committing to design.

We believe in help, not hype.
We believe in process, not pressure.
And we believe in working with clients who value doing things the right way — just like we do.

Trust Is Built on Transparency

We’re here to build great remodeling experiences — not just great rooms. And that starts with being upfront about what it takes to get the job done right.

So if you’re ready to explore your remodel the thoughtful, honest way, we’d love to start the conversation. Reach out, and let’s talk about your vision.
